GOVERNANCE FORUM

The Value of Sport: From Insight to Influence

About the Session

Following on from our first Governance Forum (Vision to Reality - Strategic Planning in Victorian Sport) our second Governance Forum for 2026 turns to one of the most important questions facing sport today:

How do we clearly articulate - and confidently advocate for - the value of sport?

Across Victoria, sport delivers significant social, health and economic benefits. Yet many organisations continue to face challenges securing funding, accessing facilities and influencing decision-makers. Our 2025 Member Survey reinforced this - with funding, advocacy and sustainabilityamong the top issues facing the sector.

Why This Matters:

This is not just a communications challenge it is a core governance responsibility.

Boards and executives play a critical role in:

  • Defining and communicating the value of their organisation
  • Setting strategic priorities and aligning resources
  • Influencing stakeholders, partners and government
  • Positioning their sport for long-term sustainability

Strong governance means not only running organisations well - but ensuring they are understood, supported, and valued.

Our Panel:

  • Hans Westerbeek - Professor of International Sport Business at Victoria University and Head of Sport Business Insights Group

  • Elyse Jenkins - CEO of VicSport

  • Tim Woolley - Director of TG Public Affairs

  • Chantella Perera - Group General Manager of KOJO Sport & President of Women Sport Australia

  • Jake Keogh - GM, Government Affairs, Strategy and Advocacy of Basketball Victoria

What We'll Explore

This forum will bring together leaders from across sport, government and industry to explore:

  • What truly resonates with government and decision-makers

  • How sport can better use data, insights and storytelling

  • What effective advocacy looks like in practice

  • How organisations — from local clubs to state bodies — can strengthen their voice and influence

  • How we can collectively elevate the value of sport across Victoria.

The session will also provide an opportunity to share and test emerging themes from Vicsport’s Election Pitch work with the sector.
