This Network has been designed to bring together participation and inclusion staff from across Victoria, whether you work for a State Sporting Association (SSA), Local Government Authority (LGA), Regional Sport Assembly (RSA) or any other peak body.

On Tuesday 5 May 2026, join us for a discussion on multicultural womens programs. This interactive online session is an opportunity to be part of creating welcoming sporting environments for everyone, to broaden your understanding and strengthen your inclusive practices as well as connecting and sharing with those who work within the sport sector.

Attendees will discover how your sport can be a powerful tool for connection, support and how to help those from diverse backgrounds feel valued, safe and empowered to participate fully.

SPEAKERS

Hosted by Dr Erica Randle from the Centre for Sport and Social Impact, we will hear about two inspirational programs that have removed barriers and provided access to active recreation for multicultural women.

Amy McArthur - Operations Manager, Local Impact

Amy will speak on Empower Her Ride which is a collaboration between Local Impact, Maribyrnong City Council, the Community Bike Hub and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

Empower Her Ride has enhanced cycling access for multicultural women within Maribyrnong City Council, providing essential bike-handling skills and safe riding practices. At the same time, the program aims to foster a sense of community and self-confidence for women from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The goal at the conclusion of the six-week initiative is to empower participants to utilise cycling as a viable mode of transport in addition to being an option for exercise and leisure.

Jess O'Brien - Sports Development Officer, Swimming Victoria
Natalie Nolan - Programs Coordinator, Leisure Networks

Jess and Nat will discuss the Splash Together pilot which was delivered within the Barwon South West region with the aim to break down cultural, financial and systemic barriers to swimming. Co-designed by Swimming Victoria, Leisure Networks and the Community Hub Australia at Northern Bay College Family Learning Centre specifically to support women from CALD backgrounds, the initiative seeks to improve health and wellbeing outcomes while creating meaningful connections to the local aquatic community.

The one-week intensive program creates a safe, culturally sensitive space that is staffed entirely by women. Many participants enter the water for the first time and are supported by interpreters and coaches. Participants take part in water safety, familiarisation and basic stroke instruction with a CPR training session and celebratory event scheduled afterwards.
