State of Sport Governance Panel

An insightful panel discussion led by MC Paul Kennedy (ABC journalist and author) featuring industry stalwart Malcolm Speed, Georgina McCann (Deputy Secretary, Sport and Experience Economy) and Andrea Pearman (Netball Victoria CEO).

The purpose of this discussion is to explore the current challenges in sport governance and is an opportunity for our panel to share their opinions and lived experiences to inspire progress in leadership across the sector.

Questions will be focused on what the current industry challenges really are, how to apply good leadership principles in complex situations and ultimately, what is at the core of good governance.

  • Paul Kennedy
    A journalist for over 30 years, Paul was the sports presenter on ABC News Breakfast from 2008 until 2021. He has authored six books including bestsellers Hell on the Way to Heaven (with Chrissie Foster) and the memoir Funkytown and has produced various documentaries including the award-winning 'Bradman and Tendulkar'.
Panellists:
  • Malcolm Speed
    Malcolm is one of Australia’s most respected sports administrators with a career spanning 40+ years across cricket, basketball, Australian Rules Football and beyond. He has held a number of high-profile positions including Executive Chairman of Basketball Australia and CEO of the NBL from 1980-1997 during a period of major growth and unheralded commercial support, CEO of the Australian Cricket Board and led the International Cricket Council from 2001-2008 as well as Chairman of Cycling Australia, Company Director of Golf Australia, Director of Sports Environmental Alliance, Director of the Richmond Football Club and in 2012, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
  • Georgina McCann
    Deputy Secretary, Sport and Experience Economy at the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR) since January 2025, Georgina brings extensive public sector leadership experience from senior roles across the industry. A graduate of the Executive Fellows Program at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG), her previous positions include being Executive Director of Community Sport and Recreation at DJSIR, Manager at KPMG Australia and Manager of the Higher Education Policy Unit in the Department of Education and Training.
  • Andrea Pearman
    Andrea brings extensive experience across community and corporate sectors while she has also worked with sport from grassroots to elite levels. In addition to more than a decade of experience as General Manager, Community Partners and Sponsorship at NAB and as a General Manager at Australia Post, Andrea has been CEO of Netball Victoria since January 2023. She is also the Co-Founder, ex-CEO and current Director of Inclusive Australia.

  • In accordance with Vicsport’s rules, 21.2(1)(a) there will be five (5) vacancies on the Board according to the rotation policy whereby five (5) positions will expire at the 2025 AGM.
