The grass-roots sport and active recreation sector plays a core role in promoting healthy and vibrant communities.
Sport and active recreation plays a much broader role than just providing physical activity opportunities. It weaves the social fabric on which our communities are built, promotes health and wellbeing, reduces the economic impact of lifestyle related diseases (which alone demand significant proportions of the State and Federal health budgets), provides employment opportunities, and is a vehicle by which major events can be delivered.
A vast array of benefits are derived from community-based sport and recreation; however the important role community sport and active recreation plays at the broader social level, in promoting positive health outcomes, and in building community capacity, is in many ways under-estimated, and under-valued.
